SINGING FABULOUS; SETS WEIRD

We attended Saturdays production. There voices and orchestra were fabulous. The dragon, Fafner was imaginatevly performed by puppeteers. Howeve, I'm tired of the four towers, a remnant of the first two Ring operas. Also some sets were nonsequitors, such as nursery setting for act 1 and the two party rooms for the splendid duet during the last 40 minutes of act 3. I didn't get what the director was trying to say there with party balloons. Ultimately though it was the gorgeous Wagner score and the lush voices which made this a terrific performance in my opinion.

CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS AND THE DESTRUCIOON OF WESTERN CIVILIZA

I must supplement my review of yesterday evening now that i’ve Read the Tribune review. Before reading that review I was content to delude myself that the tasteless visual design of the first act of Siegfried was attributable to mere incompetence. I had to rethink that after reading the Tribune’s review because it was spot on in all respects but one. The set design, costuming and even the acting direction was intended to trivialize, lighten, tone down and generally debase the art of one of the best 5 opera composers who ever lived, just as the Tribune said. That the Tribune felt doing so was the appropriate function of the technicians who were supposed to bring Wagner’s vision to life reinforces the truth that there are a great many in our society who are determined to tear down the highest achievements of Western culture, and Western civilization generally.. I repeat that the performers themselves, including the instrumentalists, the singer and Sir Andrew, are not to blame .

DISAPPOINTED IN SEIGFRIED

I agree with the tribune assessment of Seigfried- he was weak, so-so, a totally unexpected and disappointing persona for the main character. The "cutsie" antics may be entertaining to some but they are disrespectful to the opera and the composer
