Verdi's exquisite melodies and sumptuous orchestral writing shine in Luisa Miller, his middle period opera in three acts. Directed by American opera and theater maker Francesca Zambello, the never-before-seen-in-Chicago production forms part of the Lyric Opera's hotly anticipated 2019/20 season and stars Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova as Luisa and Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja as Rodolfo, the ill-fated lovers at the center of drama-filled, tumultuous storm of an opera.

American composer Jake Heggie and literary icon Terrence McNally's visceral, heart-wrenching production Dead Man Walking is quite simply necessary viewing in 21st-century opera. Premiering at San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House in 2000, the deeply moving work was praised for McNally's eloquent libretto and Heggie's stirring melodies and hymnal-inflected score, as well as its tender exploration of forgiveness and friendship on death row. Now the eye-opening sotory comes to Chicago for the first time under the direction of renowned American theater maker Leonard Foglia during the Lyric Opera's 2019/20 season.

Mozart's ultimate anti-hero returns to prance on the Civic Opera stage this winter! Heating things up with his scandalous ways, Don Giovanni is an impulsive, serial seducer whose libidinous adventures take a turn for the darkly supernatural when he crosses the line and commits murder. Bringing the nobleman's scintillating philandering to life is Russian bass singer Ildar Abdrazakov, who makes his Lyric Opera debut alongside American soprano Rachel Willis-Sorensen in the role of Donna Anna.

Singing the finales of all three of Donizetti's Three Queens Tudor trilogy in one single program is no mean feat, but American-Canadian soprano Sondra Radvanosky, a specialist in 19th-century Italian Opera is more than up to the task. Having embodied all three queens Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Queen Elizabeth I (subject of the Roberto Devereux opera) in a single season, Radvanosky brings her pristine and charismatic interpretations of the royal women to a semi-staged concert at the Chicago's Lyric Opera in December of 2019.
