If one function of art is to make us ponder difficult questions, there could not be a more potent example than Shostakovich's 13th

Why See Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Muti Conducts Shostakovich Babi Yar?

Conducted by Muti

Supremely moving, Shostakovich's 13th Symphony is a vivid symphonic poem that illustrates the damning words of poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko condemning anti-semitism. Detailing the horrific events of September 1941, the wider Soviet Jewish experience and historical revisionism that followed, it is a powerful achievement that also serves as tribute to human kindness.

Ironically subject to much censure after its 1962 premiere, it now stands as a staggering 20th century choral symphony that memorialises the 33,771 men, women and children who were killed in the massacre and the later refusal of the Soviet government to recognize its significance as a Holocaust site.

Conducted by Riccardo Muti, the performance will also feature the Men of the Chicago Symphony Chorus and bass vocalist Alexey Tikhomirov.
