Haitink Returns To Conduct Beethoven & Bruckner
For four glorious years, renowned baton-wielding maestro Bernard Haitink lead the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through some of their most celebrated interpretations of the great works in classical music, particularly shining in the former principal conductor's affinity for Beethoven. The Dutch conductor returns to the Chicago Symphony Center this summer for a special one-night-only-program consisting of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Bruckner's Symphony No. 6.
Paul Lewis CBE, the celebrated English pianist who is also a foremost interpreter of Beethoven, will join the ensemble for the concerto, lending his muscularity, tenderness, intelligence and dexterity to a piece brimming with elegant themes and an attention-grabbing solo. The program comes to a rousing close with Bruckner's little performed Sixth, a masterclass in achieving aural balance between the bold and the subtle that leaves a lasting impression thanks to its highly expressive instrumentation and imaginative writing.
