BEST PLAY EVER!

Having grown up seeing the Sound of Music movie and my daughter loving the movie when she way young - Now at 16 years old we had to see the play. My daughter's comment says it all - This was the best play ever!

LOVED IT

I have watched the movie numerous times and watched the Walmart special version last year. I thought this production was great. The scenery from the folks at the Lyric was beautiful. Orchestra great. Casting was the right choice, especially Jenn Gambatese as Maria . If you are thinking of passing on this one change your mind and go see it.

LYRIC OPERA SOUND OF MUSIC DISAPPOINTS 2014

After all the social media fanfare, positive and negative, for Sound of Music Live on tv , I looked forward seeing to my favorite musical live at the Chicago Lyric Opera house . I was thoroughly disappointed. For one, this play went through the motions of the script (which I have a copy of and pretty much have memorized) as almost a reading of the lines rather than a bringing to life approach. This version almost made the SOM a comedy going for the cheap laugh lines and kind of winking to the audience, like did you get that laugh? I was shocked at how this production underplayed the fear of 1938 Germany and underplayed the courage of the Captain and others who opposed Hitler. I was also amazed by the lack of affection Maria and the Captain had for each other. At least Maria could sing unlike Billy Zane who was awful and showed not only his limited vocal abilities but his utter lack of energy for the part. I loved the Carrie Underwood version of the broadway play. It had love and life
