The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington follows the widow of the first-ever president, George Washington. An ailing Martha Washington grapples with the juxtaposition of being cared for by the slaves who will be freed as soon as she dies. The play also asks the question: how much guilt does Martha share in regards to her husband's slave ownership?
The play is written by North Carolina born writer James Ijames who has eight works under his belt and has received awards including the 2015 Pew Fellowship in the Arts for Playwriting, the Terrance McNally New Play Award during the same year and the 2017 Whiting Award for Drama.
