Rodgers and Hammersteins' Pacific Island romance
Drury Lane presents a brand new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's enduring tale of love in the face of prejudice. This iconic musical, which features the songs 'I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair', 'Happy Talk', and 'You've Got To Be Carefully Taught', originally premiered on Broadway in 1949, and was an instant smash, picking up the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score.
Written to confront the racial bigotry that Rodgers and Hammerstein saw taking place in America, South Pacific is set during WWII on a Pacific Island. Its plot centers on two love stories, both of which are complicated by personal and social wariness of mixed race relationships.
