The Doppelganger - An international Farce

The Doppelganger - An international Farce at Steppenwolf Theatre

Why see The Doppelganger - An international Farce?

A Brand New Comedy Farce Starring Rainn Wilson

Exceptionally talented Chicagoan playwright Matthew-Lee Erlbach premieres a brand new work in his home city this Spring, bringing the riotous comedy of The Doppelganger (an international farce) to stage in conjunction with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Best known for his hilarious antics as Dwight Schrute on the American version of The Office, film and TV funnyman Rainn Wilson stars in this irreverent take on America's business relations with the rest of the world.

Together with an ensemble of the renowned company's finest, Wilson portrays wealthy British businessman Thomas Irdley, who suffers an untimely accident just before the signing of an African copper deal. Enter his American lookalike, the hapless Jimmy Peterson, also played by Wilson, who is thrust onto the stage of international resource politics to avert the impending crisis. In true farcical style, the boardroom con implodes to reveal the hands behind the puppet strings.

Loved it

Funny, bold, and of the moment. Exciting from start to finish. Chicago actors are consistently making this city proud. Steppenwolf is making a huge statement here and it's worth it. Still reeling from this big play. ... Read more

Best thing I've seen

I found this play to be expertly performed by Mr. Wilson--who knew he was such the stage actor! The direction by Ms. Landau, particularly for a farce with so many important issues was fast-paced and never felt earnest in its delivery. While the play felt a bit long, I took that as a sign of Mr. Erlbach's attempt to keep us learning and making good on the promise he asks of the audience at the beginning of the play. This is a young writer who bursting with big questions and I cannot get over how well he managed to fit all that in a comedy--a farce, no less! Bravo to the whole Steppenwolf team. Highly recommend this important work of the American Theatre. It is a sign of good things to come in live performance in Chicago. ... Read more
