Mike Bartlett's cutting "future history play" receives its Chicago premiere
Shakespeare Theatre Company present the regional premiere of Mike Bartlett's King Charles III. A brilliant and controversial "future history play", it's set in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II's death, with Prince Charles long-awaited ascension to the throne coming at a time of tumult and dissent within the country. Originally debuting in London in 2014, King Charles III swiftly transferred across the Atlantic to Broadway, where it was met with lavish praise.
This Chicago staging is directed by Gary Griffin.
As Prince Charles finally becomes Charles III following the death of the Queen, he is faced with a multitude of problems. One of his first official duties includes signing a new act restricting the freedom of the press, which he refuses, causing political uproar and the threat of a new civil war. The problems don't stop as his daughter in-law Kate schemes with the Labour Prime Minister to have him abdicate in favour of William, days after his coronation. Will the beleaguered Charles capitulate to those who hold the real power, or try to exercise the long-forgotten powers of the monarch to ensure his own survival?
