Iceboy! Review Roundup
What Are Critics Saying About The New Chicago Musical?
Tony Award-winning director Kathleen Marshall reunites Emmy Award-winning duo Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Nick Offerman for Iceboy!, a brand-new comedy musical making its world premiere at Chicago's Goodman Theatre. Featuring music by Urinetown composer Mark Hollmann, this wildly irreverent production puts a hilarious spin on theatrical history, imagining the completely fictional story behind Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh.
But has this offbeat musical thawed critics' hearts? Here's a roundup of what reviewers are saying about Iceboy! in Chicago.
Iceboy Reviews
"Iceboy! is plain fun, creatively delivered. It's a hilarious, feel good time but it delivers on its mission of fun in a new and exciting way. This cast is undeniably fabulous - there's of course a lot of star power here, and it's fantastic to see this combination of big names, Broadway stars, and Chicago talent bring their all to the antics. Whether you're a Eugene O'Neill expert or know nothing at all, this is a great experience. I had a spectacularly enjoyable and wacky time. I admire this musical's originality and carefully crafted story, but above all, I loved how much it made me really, truly laugh. It's original and delectable musical theater comedy, no doubt." - BroadwayWorld
"Smoothly directed by Marc Bruni on a wonderful set designed by Paul Tate Depoo III, and with some slick choreography by Joann M. Hunter, this is 2 hours and 25 minutes ( one 15 minute intermission) of sheer beauty in comic storytelling. Lots of inuendos, double entendre's and some pretty silly moments, including a traditoon that is unlike anything every mentioned in "Fiddler on The Roof"! The lighting (Jen Schriver) and sound ( Connor Wang) are perfect and Linda Cho's costumes are terrific." - Around The Town Chicago
"To close its centennial season, the Goodman Theatre is presenting the world premiere of Iceboy! Or The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write The Iceman Cometh, with music by Mark Hollman, lyrics by Hollman and Jay Reiss, and book by Erin Quinn Purcell and Reiss. The show is positively silly in all the best ways and with Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman surrounded by performers who can more than hold their own with two comedic powerhouses, it's exactly the right final punctuation to put on the Goodman's first one hundred years." - Talkin' Broadway
"If you want to see two very famous, very talented comic actors with Chicago roots doing exactly what they do best, then "Iceboy" is ideal. To add to that, the supporting performances show off two gifted, Tony-nominated up-and-coming stars in Grey Henson as Iceboy and Sarah Stiles as Lambert, Vera's housekeeper and Iceboy's love interest." - Chicago Sun Times
