Dance and music collide in an arresting program of neo-classical works from Stravinsky, as well as ballet-infused pieces by opera master Rossini, fellow neo-classical icon Ravel and Bliss! - a world premiere commission by Stephanie Martinez. Helmed by renowned German composer and conductor Matthias Pintscher, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra welcomes the Joffrey Ballet and its artistic director Ashley Wheater for a stunning collaboration that brings classical music to vivid life with the medium of ballet.
At the heart of the evening's program lies Chicago-based, award-winning choreographer Martinez's astonishing new work, which is set to Stravinksy's Dumbarton Oaks Concerto. One of only two chamber concertos composed by Stravinsky, it is a dramatic reinvention of the Baroque concerto from the ground up thanks to its string section outbursts, solo woodwind excursions and fugato writing.
