With silvery slivers of luxury apartment buildings sprouting across Manhattan like mushrooms after a rainstorm, the great cultural and economic divisions of India in the 17th century do not seem so very remote.

Pulitzer Prize nominee Rajiv Joseph's award-winning Off-Broadway play makes its Chicago premiere
Pulitzer prize nominee Rajiv Joseph's award-winning play and Off-Broadway triumph Guards At The Taj makes its Chicago debut as part of Steppenwolf's brand new theatre season. The programme of six plays is being hailed as an exploration of modern American culture and its diversity, which may seem surprising since Joseph's work is set in India in the mid 17th century.
Yet the play's central themes carry over into our troubled times. Its often funny and deeply meaningful story centres around the debut of the breath-taking monument the Taj Mahal. Beneath its beautiful exterior a dark truth changes the lives of two ordinary guards, one that exemplifies the divide between those in power and those beneath them.
