Bonnie Raitt

Why see Bonnie Raitt?

A Raitt Royal Return

This lady should really be known as the Comeback Kid; long time the critic's darling, she bounced back from near musical oblivion and substance abuse issues in the Eighties to become one of pop rock's biggest icons. And this year, she's back, hitting the road with her longtime touring band.

Having started her career during the 1970s, Raitt released a series of acclaimed roots-influenced albums which incorporated elements of blues, rock, folk and country, but she is perhaps best known for her more commercially accessible recordings in the 1990s including "Nick of Time", "Something to Talk About", "Love Sneakin' Up on You", and the slow ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me".

Following her comeback album 2005 Souls Alike, she took a hiatus following the death of her parents and best friend; not to be beaten, her 2012 album Slipstream saw it enter the Billboard 200 chart at number 6, with rave reviews.

Raitt has received nine Grammy Awards in her career and is a lifelong political activist, campaigning for environmental issues, providing musical instruments for underprivileged children, and against the expansion of nuclear power.

A Mass with Bonnie Raitt at the Chicago Theatre

The procession of Bonnie's band to the stage and her first note immediately lit up the crowd. Her liturgy of songs with roots in the 60's brought back to life an old testament that music moves seamlessly through time. Bonnie's skills on guitar and her powerful, seductive and sweet voice entered our souls on a beautiful summer night. Her familiar hymns we all knew and sang. Her homily to John Prine with Angel from Montgomery will long be remembered by all who absorbed the moment . And her covers of David Byre and Annie Lennox showcased her talent and generosity. Ricky, Hutch, Glenn, Duke and George were the pipe organs behind Bonnie throughout our holy night together. Go see Bonnie on this tour if you have get the chance. ... Read more

The set is tight and the setlist dips deep into her extensive catalog of music. Her voice is as good as ever and her playing world class. Seeing Bonnie Raitt in concert is a blast! The Chicago Theater is beautiful and has good acoustics. It is a nice venue. ... Read more

New Band Members?

This was the third time I've seen Bonnie and she was outstanding, as always. I was heartened to see the broad, positive response to Angel from Montgomery, and she appreciated it. At the outset she introduced "some new members of the band" and it felt to me like they were not together. The lead guitar was very adequate, but Bonnie blew him away. The keyboard player seemed to get lost at times and a couple of his solos amounted to 10 fingers pounding on random keys. A great show, I would always recommend it! ... Read more
