Les Miserables

Les Miserables at Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace

Why see Les Miserables?

As Drury Lane celebrates its 30th anniversary season, they kick things off with a truly iconic musical, Les Miserables! A sweeping tale of romance, revolution and redemption that is not to be missed.

Based on Victor Hugo's novel, "Les Mis" takes you through three turbulent decades of 19th century France. Paroled ex-convict Jean Valjean is hunted relentlessly by Javert for breaking the terms of release and absconding. Somehow he must throw off the shackles of his past, and keep his vow to the fallen Fantine, to raise her young daughter Cosette.

With revolution in the air and Javert closing in, Valjean is forced to fight; both for his life and to protect the people he loves.

Les Miserables has garnered 50 international theater awards and is considered the world's longest running musical. It recently enjoyed an Academy Award-winning film adaptation, starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.

Impressive, stirring

Of the many shows we've seen at Drury Lane, this was probably the most impressive production. While not exactly a toe tapping type musical, the story line tears at your heart. But the tunes were being hummed by virtually every audience member on the way out. The cast was enthralling, the music stirring and the audience mesmerized. If you've never seen the play or the film, you must see this production. If you've seen it on Broadway, you'll see some familiar faces. If you saw the film you will enjoy this all the more. Be advised, extra handkerchiefs recommended. ... Read more

If you didn't like it you don't know Les Miz

Just wonderful

I cannot believe the criticism of this remarkable production. We left the theater completely drained emotionally. The performers put their hearts into every word, every action. The seats were fine, except I always manage to have a tall person in front of me. ( I'm 4'10). We are from Pennsylvania and the theater was truly beautiful, the staff helpful and friendly. I would go again if our vacation wasn't ending soon. Valjean, Javert, such dynamics between the two. Little gavroche, powerful. Eponine displayed such feeling.. Poor reviews for this play are hard to fathom. Credit should be given to performers who have brought to life the greatest literature ever written. ... Read more
