Once again, Salt Creek Ballet will march its way onto the stage this December for the holiday season! Follow the journey of our brave heroine Clara and her dashing Nutcracker prince, as they battle armed mice and celebrate victory at the court of the Sugar Plum Fairy! A must-see for ballet fans to celebrate the festive season with all the family.
What Is It About?
The legend of the Nutcracker is arguably the most famous of Tchaikovsky and Petipa's ballet collaborations, a sweet coming-of-age story for a young girl who beats the odds against magic and mayhem to have a truly magical Christmas.
Young Clara is given a nutcracker doll by her eccentric uncle at a Christmas party, which unfortunately gets broken by her boisterous younger brother. Mended by her uncle, Clara nurses the nutcracker doll until she falls asleep under the tree. When she awakens, the house is in darkness, until the peace is broken by a marauding pack of armed mice who are determined to fight a troop of toy soldiers.
Finding herself shrunk to their size, she battles against the dastardly Mouse King, throwing her slipper at it. Her nutcracker doll springs into action, no longer a wooden doll but a handsome young prince, and defeats the King promptly. Thanking Clara, they both head into the night to a wintry, snowy forest on an adventure.
Greeted by dancing snowflakes, they are led to the court of the benevolent Sugar Plum Fairy, who honors their victory by putting on a huge dance spectacle for them. This is why the Nutcracker comes into its own; Russian dancers whirl, Chinese tea dancers perform extraordinary feats, and all manner of sweet confections take human form and perform exquisite dances. Is this all a dream for Clara - or is there something more about the handsome Nutcracker than she knows?
