Eifman Ballet Of St. Petersburg: Red Giselle

Eifman Ballet Of St. Petersburg: Red Giselle at Auditorium Theatre

Why see Eifman Ballet Of St. Petersburg: Red Giselle?

A HAUNTING TRIBUTE

The esteemed Eifman Ballet are back this season with their 1997 hit Red Giselle. Immortalising the extraordinary life of prima ballerina Olga Spessivtseva, this contemporary tragedy follows her early days before the devastating Revolution forced her to flee Russia, her rise to fame in Jazz Age Paris and her embittered descent into madness in exile in New York City. Choreographed by Eifman himself, this melancholy drama is as electrifying as it is moving, telling the tale of political oppression and the cost it takes from the individual.

The young Eifman founded his own ballet company in 1977, with the goal of solely performing his own work. It has become famous for its innovative and unabashedly radical approach to the art form, often drawing inspiration from classical literature and theatre - past ballets have included The Seagull, Twelfth Night and many more evocative and moving works.
