Powerful story of love and redemption
This third collaboration between Steppenwolf and South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo may be the best of the bunch. The brilliant hook is to frame the love story in the relationship between a Chicago guy (the show begins at Kingston Mines and has blues music throughout) and a South African woman (how has an amazing voice and stage presence, but also and most importantly has Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the a capella group most famous for Paul Simon’s Graceland album, onstage with her all night as her own Greek chorus). As the couple draw together, so does their music, in delightful and thought-provoking ways. The jokes work, even if some of them are ones you’ve heard in other contexts your whole lives. But the love story, between the characters and their music, is what drives this show straight through your heart.
