IMPRESSIVE, STIRRING

Of the many shows we've seen at Drury Lane, this was probably the most impressive production. While not exactly a toe tapping type musical, the story line tears at your heart. But the tunes were being hummed by virtually every audience member on the way out. The cast was enthralling, the music stirring and the audience mesmerized. If you've never seen the play or the film, you must see this production. If you've seen it on Broadway, you'll see some familiar faces. If you saw the film you will enjoy this all the more. Be advised, extra handkerchiefs recommended.

OUTSTANDING ENTERTAINMENT

My husband and I went to Drury Lane for the first time to see the April 5 performance of Les Mis. We could not have been more pleased by the quality and entertainment value of the show. The singing, acting, orchestra, choreography, set designs, costumes...I can't think of anything that seemed to fall short. The lead actors (including the children) blew us away. We watched the 25th anniversary performance of Les Mis on TV a few days later, and we felt the singing at Drury Lane matched up very well. The stage itself was not large, but what the performers, set designers, etc. were able to do with it was amazing. The only downside had nothing to do with the actual show--I found the theater to be quite chilly. (Just a warning for women who are not wearing long skirts or pants--I laid my husband's coat over my legs when the show started and was quite comfortable after that.) I would expect to see a show of this caliber in downtown Chicago or New York. I would highly recommend this show.

MISSED THE MARK

Went to the Sunday Mar 30 afternoon show. Seen this show on and off Broadway many times. The main characters (Jean Valjean and Javert) lacked any emotional connection. Set crew was in the middle of the stage during one of the scenes. Sound crew didn't turn on the echo effect during the gutter scene until after it was half way over. Didn't understand the blocking, especially at the end of act I. Several notes were missed throughout the production. On the upside, Cosette was exceptional. All in all this was not a good day for Drury Lane.
