The snapshots Gomez creates, enlivened by occasional choral songs hold enough intrigue, horror, and fortitude to make for a memorable evening

Plays

A Powerful Story Of Violence, Loss & Resiliance

Steppenwolf's groundbreaking 2018/19 theater season continues with perhaps the most important play to come out of Mexico in recent times. Ciudad Juarez-born, Chicago-based playwright Isaac Gomez's La Ruta makes its astonishing world premiere in December 2018/January 2019, shining a light on the plight of over 1500 women and girls who were brutally kidnapped, tortured and dumped in the desert surrounding the playwright's home city, which stands just across the boarder from El Paso, Texas.

Based on the real accounts of those who survived, the heavy-hitting drama tells their stories in a tender and human way, evoking their protests, factory work and loss with a live music score and simple dialogue. An all female cast of Latinx performers bear witness to their astonishing stories of courage, hope and survival, which are all brought together by La Ruta, the bus that shuttles them from their homes to the and back on the dangerous road and now historical road between them.
