Guest violinist Leila Josefowicz features!
Special guest violinist Leila Josefowicz is celebrated for her passionate playing and enthusiasm to work with new composers. In this program of three works, she will be performing John Adams; Scheherazade.2 in a celebration of the composer's 70th birthday. The other works include Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, and Stravinsky's electrifying The Rite of Spring. Conducted by guest maestro, Finnish orchestral conductor and composer, Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring is a 104 year-old masterpiece that continues to have a radiating influence on modern classical music. Originally created for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes' season in 1913 Paris, this piece followed his previous masterpieces, Firebird in 1910 and Petrushka in 1911. Despite a muted response at its premiere and following London tour, it came to great acclaim when it was performed nearly a full 20 years later! Since then, it is a firm part of the Stravinsky trio.
