Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Honeck, Capucon, Shostakovich

Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Honeck, Capucon, Shostakovich at Symphony Center Orchestra Hall

Why see Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Honeck, Capucon, Shostakovich?

A transformative evening

Manfred Honeck takes a break from his tenure as the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to step up to the baton for this special program headlined by Shostakovich's transformative Fifth Symphony. Both his deliverance from the Soviet regime and a sly commentary on life under Stalin, it is noted for its mournful tones that build slowly to a powerful and unforgettable lament.

Opening the program is Glinka's Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila, followed by the United States premiere of  Lera Auerbach's Diary of a Madman, written for the cellist Gautier Capucon, who joins the symphony for its performance.
