A MEDITATION ON MIDWESTERN STEREOTYPES

Most exciting about the play was the fast dynamic between actors Jones and Marquez, as well as the beautiful and evolving costume changes--an homage to Rashad's sitcom wardrobes? Difficult to determine the passing of time throughout the play--have these roommates lived together days, weeks, months? Potentially damaging are the lowbrow regional stereotypes of Iowan and Bronxian. While I applaud Silverman for her focus on the conceit of "invisible woman", reducing these women to caricatures of place--"I live in Iowa, but I'm FROM Illinois," (Marquez's affirmation of not being from somewhere)-- reinforces damaging regional stereotypes here and throughout the production (cf. the "uncultured" Idaho friend, Tina).
