They Don't make Em Like This Anymore
The Goodman Theatre revives one of Leonard Bernstein's lesser known works in a lavish, full scale production. With a book by Fields and Chodorov, and lyrics by Comden & Green, Wonderful Town is a zippy delight, packed full of witty novelty songs and brassy show-stopping tunes. Originally appearing on Broadway in 1953, the show won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This 44-person production at the Goodman is directed by Tony winner Mary Zimmerman (Metamorphoses).
What is Wonderful Town About?
It's 1935, and Midwestern sisters Ruth and Eileen Sherwood move to New York from their sleepy home in Ohio to make their name. Ruth wants to become a writer, while Eileen has dreams of becoming an actress. They settle in New York's Greenwich Village, a hotbed of creativity and radical ideas, but they soon find that success doesn't come easy. The temptation to accept defeat and return to Ohio is a big one, but both girls knuckle down in pursuit of their dreams.
