BRILLIANT!

I missed it when it was here in the city, well worth the drive out to Oakbrook Terrace for it. Cast were fantastic & the set design is really well done. a delight for all ages.

VERY DISAPPOINTING

We are regular subscribers to Drury Lane Oakbrook, and have been happy with the shows. However....this one was sub-par. Left after first 20 minutes. Not worth our time. 1. The forced British accents made most characters unintelligible. Especially, Matilda. We could not understand her at all. 2. The singing was poor and out of tune. The intonation of Matilda was very poor. Probably nerves, but still....should be better. 3. Sound system made everyone hard to understand. Was very tinny and harsh. Second show in a row with issues....not happy. Beauty and the Beast had multiple technical difficulties and had to be stopped and restarted at least 4 times. Their singing was superb, but the issues disrupted the flow of the show.

DEAR DISAPPOINTED

If you would like to see a polished production, don’t purchase a ticket for a preview performance. These are practice performances for the cast and the technical crew (hence the term “tech week”) in which the cast first works with the live orchestra, microphones/sound/lighting/computer projection systems are set up and glitches are worked out, and the director works out the final staging (up until this point, rehearsals are held in an open room with a piano and no sets.). You will be much happier with your experience (at any theater), if you attend after the official Opening Night.

TERRIFIC SHOW!

This version of Matilda is true to the book which means it's quirky, dark, Roald Dahl kind of humor. It's amazing to watch such young kids hold their own alongside more seasoned adult actors. Good music, engaging story, impressive choreography, beautiful sets and costumes, ample laughs...it's a good, fun show that is definitely worth the trip to Oak Brook. I especially liked Matilda and the rest of the Wormwood family, but the Trunchbull and Miss Honey were terrific, too. I saw the show with my wife and we already plan to see it again with our children.

LONG AND MEAN

While this play had its moments, it was extremely mean. A lot of the singing was done by kids which at times seemed like screeching. Ms Honey's part was very good and even. After reading the Harry Potter books, I am convinced that british audiences enjoy horrible things happening to school kids. The mother, father and schoolmaster were all good. Two bright spots were when a kid was tossed across the room and another when a kid belched. There are some bright spots, but they could not over come the length and tone of the play.

BEAUTIFUL UNDERLYING STORY

Prior to seeing this show, I was not familiar with Matilda (books, movie or musical) and I loved it! The musical is incredibly catchy, yet the ballads are haunting. Staging was really cool -- used projection screens to transform into different locations and even different time periods. An incredibly complex show technically and choreographically, and the ensemble managed it flawlessly. The show is appropriate for all ages, but ironically, it may connect more for adults, on a sentimental level. Standout performers were Sean Fortunato (Miss Trunchbull), Jackson Evans (Mr Wormwood), Stephanie Gibson (Mrs Wormwood), Alex Benoit (Rudolpho), Andrew MacNaughton (Doctor/Sergei), Joshua Zingerman (Bruce) and of course Audrey Edwards (Matilda). Highly recommended!

MATILDA THE MUSICAL

I knew nothing about this play or the central theme until I read the synopsis in the Playbill. This production was very disappointing because it was almost impossible to understand the dialogue and lyrics given the staged British accents. Thus, I feel I wasted my time and money. We decided not to leave at intermission for the sake of the young actors (and because I didn't know the ending), but shortly into the second act, there was a medical emergency which stopped the play. We decided there was no reason to stick around since we weren't really enjoying the production. The staging is excellent, and the young actors are truly talented. It was just the fake accents that kept us from understanding what was going on. If you know the story well, you might be ok with the dialogue/lyrics. If you don't know the story, just be warned. You might have the same reaction we did.
