In a Lyric Opera first, this new production of Christoph Willibald Gluck's dreamlike Orphee et Eurydice will feature a collaboration with the Joffrey Ballet, adding to the work's wonderful luminosity. The story of devoted husband Orphee and his despair at Eurydice's death, this heartrending opera is an overwhelmingly romantic tale that includes a journey to Elysium, the wrath of the Furies and seemingly impossible bargain.
Orpheus mourns his recently departed wife Eurydice at her tomb, despairing at the thought of living without her. When Cupid offers him the chance to see her again, he accepts the quest, his heart full of a possible reunion. However, he must accept the terms of his task, when he rescues her, he is not to look upon her before they make their return. Orpheus stills his nerve and resolves to complete the journey, regardless of the implications.
