BRILLIANT PRODUCTION - OVERTURE TO EXIT MUSIC
I basically know the entire score from memory, and I’ve never seen or HEARD a better production of West Side Story! Characters so well drawn… amazing! I wonder if the choice of a female Doc was an homage to the amazing work Rita Moreno did in the recent Spielberg film as Doc’s widow - didn’t resonate as well despite a fine performance by Ms VenJohnson. And, those voices… a mesmerizing Tony, a celestial Maria, a piercing (in the best possible way) Anita - just WOW! So glad I made the trek from NYC to Chicago to experience this! CONGRATULATIONS/FELICITACIONES to the entire company. (And, thanks, Amanda, for the selfie to go alongside my recent bucket list moment with Rita Moreno! Now I have proof of meeting TWO amazing, moving, powerful actors who completely inhabited the role!)

BETTER THAN BROADWAY
Traveled from the east coast to see this and it was totally worth it. I had seen Lyric’s 2019 version and was mesmerized by it so I was thrilled to return this year. How often do we get to see an original skit-score-choreography rendition of the greats Laurents-Bernstein-Sondheim-Robbins most amazing collaboration? Lyric Opera’s revival of this musical on their grand stage with 49 cast members and full lush orchestra is a treat for the senses, with messages still relevant for today. Powerful! The new Tony of 2023 is incredible, the best voice I’ve ever heard among on screen or on stage versions. Anita packs a punch with her powerful voice and is the star dancer as usual for this role. Jets and Sharks movements - riveting and timeless Jerome Robbins choreography! A must-see! Worth traveling to Chicago to see this gem, wherever you are.
