MY GREATEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Yesterday night I saw the premier of the opera " Queen of Spade". It was long anticipated staging of one of my favorite opera by Peter Tchaikovsky. Of course music is excellent and performance by Brandon Jovanovich, Sondra Radvanovsky, and other singers were very good, but staging by Richard Jones and design by John Macfarlane were awful, I would say disgusting. If Tchaikovsky or Pushkin resurrected to see this opera, they would died again being ashamed of misrepresentation of their artwork. In my opinion it is profanation of art. It is sad the great Chicago Lyric Opera felt so low.

ABSOLUTELY HORRID

We've been opera goes for the last 20 years. There were some productions that we liked batter than others but this is out of the ordinary horrid production. I get it, there can be many modern interpretations of the classics but either stick to modern or classic. This one was a mix of both and done in the lowest taste possible. The voices and music even did not compensate of what was going on on stage. The text of the lyric was in complete dissonance of what was shown. The opening is a spring scene where children are happy and cheerful. Here we see them marching in soviet style with gray uniforms. Same thing with adults dressed in gray winter clothes when they sing of a beautiful spring marching in military style across the stage. It gets only worse and worse from there. The prince is dressed like a gangster or mobster, no dignity in his appearance. The skeletons are from horror movie marching on stage. Only if you keep your eyes closed the performance can be somewhat enjoyable.

HORROR! ABSOLUTELY MOCKERY OF THE GREATEST OPERA !

I've seen ” Queen of Spades ” in multiple productions in European and Russian Opera theaters, but this new Chicago Lyric Opera’s Production of The Famous Tchaikovsky Opera was a complete Disaster, which have absolutely no Connection to neither a Pushkin’s drama or Tchaikovsky ’s Masterpiece! Producers and directors seemed to deliberately made fun of the iconic peace of Art by staging in the dirty shack ( instead of elaborate palace), With ”peeping Tom” literally crawling on roof -as a Gherman, With Giant Skeleton, who lays down in bad with Gherman hugging him ( instead of a ghost of a queen that suppose to appear in Gherman’s sleep ...)!?!? Staging Producer even brought a gay man on stage, who were dancing suggestively in front of half naked men in the dirty shack( supposedly casino )?!? I've never seeing anything more insulting in my entire life!!! Hard to tell what have prompted Producers to do such thing : total incompetence or plain ignorance?!? But the final result is obvious: Entire Stage production ( except great singers, of course and magnificent music!)- was trashed and basically, turned in to complete failure of a disaster’s proportion!!! Shame on producers a directors for such a Mockery of the greatest Classical Icons as Pushkin and Tchaikovsky!!!
