A plot is hatched amongst soldiers and sisters
Grammy Award winner, Ana Maria Martinez will have a welcome return to Chicago's operatic home this season! She is set to play Fiordiligi, in Mozart's satirical opera Cosi Fan Tutte (rendered as "Women Are Like That"), or perhaps in the less misogynistic but aptly revealing subtitled, "The School For Lovers" (as Mozart's librettist Da Ponte would have had it called). This risque comedy opera about relationship boundaries will be led by the baton of James Gaffigan in his Lyric Opera debut and includes the heartrending trio, 'Soave Sia il Vento'.
What is Cosi Fan Tutte about?
Two Sisters, Fiordiligi and Dorabella are persistently wooed by a pair of foreigners while their soldier fiances are away at war, but this is just a test of fidelity set up by the philosophising master of ceremonies, Don Alfonso (Alessandro Corbelli) who gains a collaborator in Despina the maid. Alas, the foreigners are in fact their betrothed in disguise. Guglielmo and Ferrando set out to seduce the others partner in order to win the wager set before them by Alfonso. Over the course of the deception, the young couples definition of love and certainty is thrown off-kilter, with their feelings revealed to us through Mozartes masterful score.
