Why see John Mellencamp?

The Legendary Roots Rocker

Singer-songwriter pioneer John Mellencamp continues to tour playing music from his back catalog as well as more recent albums, including 2022's Strictly A One-Eyed Jack. In addition to his musical career, Mellencamp is also an accomplished painter, actor, and film director. Don't miss the 'Voice of the Heartland' when he takes to the stage in your town this year!

Mellencamp's career stretches back some over thirty years, and he has molded his brand of dusky heartland rock to every new genre and style that comes along. From Springsteen-Esque anthems to stripped down, T-Bone Burnett produced country songs, his sharp and simple lyrical style that is unerringly able to pinpoint the mood of the nation has continued to shine through. Among his best-known tracks are 'Jack and Diane', which spent four weeks at Number 1, and 'Hurts So Good'. Along the way, he's been awarded a Grammy and been inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Legend

Mellencamp is one of those performers that is a true artist. He is a legend and should be on your list to see live if you haven't already. He's a great storyteller, and he still brings high energy to his performance. He plays a mix of well-known its and lesser-known gems, altho for a lifetime fan like me, was appreciated. I loved that I knew every song he played, but that not everybody in the audience did. Still, on the popular favorites, he had everyone singing along. Also, for those complaining about the film clip at the start of the concert, hm, maybe you should consider why. It was not just random clips. Every single one of those clips features a line or phrase that can be found in one of his songs. They were literally the inspirations that helped forge his music. They were absolutely appreciated by those of us who know that every choice an artist makes has a specific purpose. It amazes me who quick people just reject something they don't understand instead of maybe taking a minute to consider why. IT's that kind of small mindedness that Mellencamp has been waging a campaign against through his music for decades. Truly legendary. ... Read more

Don't expect a hit parade, but good thoughtful show

It's Mellencamp's show, and if you don't like it, you can leave. I (and most of the audience) could have done without the 30 minute video intro filled with black and white movie clips, but it does provide a setting of who Mellencamp wanted to be. Mellencamp arrives with a cigarette in his mouth and a raspy voice under a backdrop of a 20's speakeasy. He warns you that the show might get political, will not be a hit parade concert, and might have some slow songs. The band was (of course) top notch, esp the drummer. Mellencamp skipped the arena bombast sound of R.O.C.K. and "I need a lover". He had his trademark fiddle/accordion sound, churning slightly reworked versions of many of his hits designed for mid-sized venues. He delivered a few new songs with semi-rambling stories and irascible social commentary. Dancing? Well, he's like 73, so not much. His voice was relatively capable and in tune but a bit age-slurred. The high notes were ably covered by the band members. ... Read more
