It's Delightful, it's Delicious, it's De-lovely
All aboard! The HMS Anything Goes is making harbor at the Benedum Center this summer in an exciting production from Pittsburgh CLO. Written by great American composer Cole Porter, the original production premiered on Broadway in 1934 and was a rip-roaring success despite the lack of disposable income due to the Great Depression, going on to enjoy constant revivals over the years, a lasting legacy in the musical theatre canon and making it a popular choice for school and community productions.
What is the story?
Featuring a big band orchestra, Anything Goes is a hi-jink-laden tale that takes place on board the SS American, an ocean liner bound from New York to London. Classic songs like 'I Get A Kick Out Of You', 'It's De-Lovely' and title tune 'Anything Goes' punctuate the madcap adventures of wall street broker and stowaway Billy Crocker, evangelist turned nightclub songstress Reno Sweeney, wealthy and beautiful heiress Hope Harcourt, her hapless yet handsome English fiance Evelyn Oakleigh and second-rate gangster 'Moonface' Martin and his girlfriend Bonnie, who've disguised themselves as a minister and a missionary. Hearts and hopes collide during a rollicking romp filled with laughter, cheer, and old-school Broadway gumption.
