Romeo y Julieta

Romeo y Julieta at The Yard Chicago Shakespeare Theater

Why see Romeo y Julieta?

Bilingual Adaptation

Chicago Shakespeare Theatre presents a bold new bilingual adaptation of Shakespeare's iconic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. The classic tragic love story is re-set in Miami in the 1960s, and brought to the Chicago Stage in both Spanish and English with projected titles for translation. Helmed by director Henry Godinez and adaptated by Godinez with Karen Zacarias, dive in to the story of two warring families - the Montescos and Capuletas - who both pay the ultimate price for their violent feud. A must-see!

What Is The Story?

Reimagined in 1960s Miami in an era where the post-revolution exodus sees the city with a growing Cuban population, two-star-crossed lovers must thwart their two respective warring families if they are to be married and reconcile their loved ones. The rash actions of a few key players across the clans of Montesco and Capuleta, along with bad timing and harsh justice all reverberate throughout the rest of the play, sending it spiraling to its ultimately tragic conclusion.
