I have never had such a visceral experience at the opera before in my life. This is certainly the best Lyric production I have ever seen. The only downside was how embarrassingly close I was to the person next to me, given that I wept uncontrollably multiple times during the performance. Not only is this a great show for opera lovers, but I also believe it is an exceptional conversion work for opera doubters. I would also encourage anyone with friends or relatives who are, shall we say, somewhat uncomfortable with gay relationships to come and witness not only the universality with which this love story is rendered, but also to appreciate the viciousness with which these fellow Americans have historically been cast out. I am on the verge of tears again just recalling my experience at the performance. An incredible work of art, rendered impeccably by a marvelous cast and creative team.
