One of Rodger and Hammerstein's greatest works, The King and I is the story of the relationship between the King of Siam and the English tutor of his rabble of children, Anna Leonowens. While the two initially find that their differing cultures and upbringing creates tension and confusion, a loving friendship soon begins to blossom.
Famously made into a film starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr, the musical is actually based on Leonowens' real account, which detailed her six year stay in Siam ending in 1867. A wonderfully lavish musical culture clash, the score includes such timeless classics as Getting to Know You, Shall We Dance and Whistle a Happy Tune.
There's no better place to see it performed than the Marriott Theatre. Founded in 1975, the theater has a long history of hosting Broadway productions and premiering new musicals, such as Peggy Sue Got Married and The Bowery Boys. An estimated eight million people have stepped through its doors, so you're in good company.
