Film noir takes to the stage
In the City of Angels lies sell, and it's this mantra that follows a young crime writer as he heads to Los Angeles to turn his best-selling book into a feature film. Played out on two stages, you'll have a hard time discerning which one is telling the 'reel' story in this dark and comic look at the 1940s Tinsel Town.
The musical first appeared on stage in 1989 on Broadway, where it scooped up several Tony and Drama Desk awards - including the Tony for Best New Musical! An early-90s run in the West End was just as well received, winning that production the Olivier for Best New Musical, composer Cy Coleman's jazzy score no doubt having a very positive impact on the musical's reception!
What is City of Angels about?
Hollywood has come a-knocking for a young New York writer when he is presented with an offer he can't refuse - to have his successful crime novel turned into a major feature film. But the literary world of the East Coast and the film world of the West are very different worlds, and he soon finds his artistic integrity at odds with the money-driven movie moguls of Hollywood.
