The Little Foxes

Closed June 7, 2015

A revival of Lillian Hellman's cloying melodrama about avarice in the Old South

Why See The Little Foxes?

Catch for Us the Foxes, the little foxes

Lillian Hellman's classic Southern melodrama is revived at the Albert Goodman Theatre, under the direction of Henry Wishcamper. Centered on the power-hungry Hubbard family in turn-of-the-century Alabama, The Little Foxes is an intense, pessimistic exploration of a grasping for wealth which knows no limits.

First performed on Broadway in 1939, Little Foxes has enjoyed countless acclaimed revivals over the years, not least in 1967 with a Mike Nichols helmed adaptation which starred Anne Bancfroft and George C. Scott. This Goodman production stars Shannon Cochran (The Ring) as Regina, alongside Michael Canavan, Rae Gray and Mary Beth Fisher.

What is The Little Foxes About?

In 1900 Alabama, the old order of gentile southern land owners is being replaced by a new greedy merchant class, for whom the pursuit of money knows no bounds. It's a conflict which will split the Hubbard family into pieces.

The story begins with daughter Regina incensed that her father leaves her nothing in his will, splitting the estate between her two brothers. So when her kin come calling, wanting her investment in a new cotton mill, it sparks of a chain of events which sees Regina clawing her way to wealth and power any way that she can.
