Beauty pageants are a big deal in Colombia, from Miss Coffee Farmer to Miss Mermaid, there's something for just about everyone. Which is why it should come as no surprise that the practice is still continued even when the participants are behind bars. Inspired by this very idea, Jose Rivera, (The Motorcycle Diaries) wrote Another Word For Beauty, a profound exploration of women in prison, their struggles, fears and tiny victories as they race to become Miss El Buen Pastor Bogota.
Directed by Steve Cosson with music and lyrics by Grammy winner Hector Buitrago, this play-with-music challenges stereotypes as the women find motivation and respite from the daily grind through sparkling outfits, outrageous headpieces and dance. But will any positive outcomes outlast their outrageously over-the-top pageant makeup? Or will team work and motivation truly lead to rehabilitation.
