Deemed by the great Russian composer Shostakovich as "the perfect masterpiece", Weinberg's powerful opera 'The Passenger' makes its Lyric Opera premiere after 40 years of repression. The highly masterful and emotional work is based on a radio drama by Auschwitz survivor Zofia Psmysz-Piasecka and presents a harrowing and poignant look back into the emotional trauma and consequences of the Holocaust.
The story follows West German diplomat Walter and his wife Liese on the cusp of their new life in Brazil. Aboard the ship carrying them to Walter's new post, all is pristine and white, a sharp contrast to the darkness that Liese silently bears - unbeknownst to her husband, she was once an SS officer in Auschwitz. The past rears its ugly head when Liese thinks she recognizes a former inmate of the camp on the ship.
