Bel Canto (Italian. 'Beautiful singing')
Based on Ann Pachett's best-selling novel, which in turn was inspired by the real events of the Lima Crisis of 1996, Bel Canto is a truly compelling and contemporary story, examining the universal language of music and how it can create rare bonds under unimaginable circumstances.
A party goes somewhat awry - The story of Bel Canto
Peru - The vice president has invited many foreign dignitaries to his mansion under the guise of a birthday party, but really the guest of honor is Kasumi Hosokawa, a successful Japanese executive. In order to court his business they have invited the charismatic Roxanne Cross, a famous American soprano, to provide a unique performance.
But the party is interrupted by some invited guests in the form of a group of terrorists seeking the president. When they discover he is elsewhere they decide to take the whole group hostage, in a siege that lasts for many months.
Over time, the captives and captors begin to form unlikely friendships, as fear, anxiety, humanity and even love begin to permiate the group during this strange political stand off. A touching tale of universality and attachement, Bel Canto is a surefire gem of the season, and is curated by Lyric Opera's own Rene Fleming.
