A feminist skewering of princess pop culture
Warning, adult Disney Princess fans - this biting new musical satire by Dennis T. Giacino that lit up critics when premiering Off-Off-Broadway strips away the sparkle and fuzziness of your favorite animated heroines as they toss out their tiaras to tell you how it really is. Seashell bras, poisoned apples, prickly spinning wheels and glass slippers are thrown by the wayside in this nationwide hit that will ensure you will never see the princess phenomenon the same again. The show was nominated for a 2015 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical and a 2015 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Musical.
THE BACKGROUND
The brainchild of former history teacher Giacino, the concept of turning princess worship on its head came about when teaching his class about the British colonialization of Virginia - and ended up examining how Disney transformed the original historical figure of Pocahontas from a rough and ready 10-year old Powatan child into a flowing haired, 20-year old sexualized vixen. What would the real Pocahontas have to say about her Disney character?
From this simple question, Giacino penned a musical examining each of the canonical Disney Princesses, and what they would potentially have to say about their Disney-fication. Be prepared to hear from Pocahontas, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Mulan et al as they tell you exactly what their happy endings look like - minus the rainbows, kisses and sunsets.
